Aristotle understood humility as a moral virtue, wedged between arrogance and moral weakness. He believed that it must involve accurate self-knowledge thus needing a generous acknowledgment of the qualities of others of which avoids distortion and/or extremes.
Greek philosopher Socrates held that above all, wisdom is knowing what we do not know. His form of intellectual humility, of which he taught, is described as freely acknowledging the gaps in our knowledge and to humbly seek what we do not know.
It is important that as members of a species, of which is far from perfect, that we do not loose sight of our fallibility and the role we play in the broader sense of our communities and in the world. 
What does humility mean to me?
To be humble is to align with something greater.
It allows me to see beyond self-promotion and pride.
Humility does not place myself below or above others.
It allows me to learn greater things outside of myself. 
To be humble I must be honest with both myself and with others. 
It is important that I stay in line with the truth and not be taken in by pride. This allows me to act from a place of strength and sincerity.
