Autodesk AutoCAD's original release was in December 1982. Since then, AutoCAD has advanced considerably in terms of user interface, functionality, and general user experience. Many changes have been made since its first release.
Autodesk AutoCAD was launched with a 6-inch, full-color display, and the first 10 new AutoCAD releases (1982 to 1991) all shipped with a 6-inch monitor.
Today, AutoCAD runs on computers with graphics cards (GPUs) that handle the drawing engine, and on-screen graphics, including Windows, Mac OS, Linux, iOS, and Android devices. These new technologies allow CAD users to work on the same CAD drawing on a tablet or mobile device as they do on the desktop, when connected via a network, or on a workstation if disconnected from the network. Newer mobile and web apps also offer true touch interfaces.
By contrast, the first AutoCAD releases were monochrome, with a 3.5-inch CRT monitor or a high-resolution monochrome (green) monitor. These early releases of AutoCAD featured a command line interface (CLI) and a command-line user interface (CLUI).
In its first release, AutoCAD did not provide any way for a user to indicate that they had started a drawing or exited a command. Instead, the user needed to exit the command by typing Control-Z.

ABX Import and ABX Export

 External CAD systems AutoCAD has many native interfaces to external drawing systems (such as SolidWorks, Inventor and others). These native interfaces can be used to exchange information with other applications that support the same interfaces, such as the Building Information Modeling (BIM) format. For example, Inventor and Dassault Systèmes SOLIDWORKS and CATIA use the STEP (Standard for Universal Transfer of Product Model Data) format for similar functionality.
