Simulator for Collective Motion and Dance is a handy app that simulates the dynamics of a group of performers, directed by the movements of a leader or by different group-level rules. Each dancer in the group performs according to a set of rules assigned to them. Dynamic group movements are described and synthesized by the parameters of the system.
Simulator for Collective Motion and Dance installation includes an Android application for Android tablets and a corresponding user interface (iOS) and is available free of charge on Play Store and iTunes.
Use the application to:
- create an interactive pattern-generating tool for your own app;
- learn more about choreography theory;
- plan a program, develop ideas, and formulate dance-related problems;
- re-create a dance style from a video clip;
- understand and control the dynamics of a group of dancers.
In the simulator, the researchers can assign movements to the dancers according to the following modes:
- randomized: the dancers move randomly, or follow the rules of simple or complex routines;
- simple: the dancers follow simple two-body or three-body interactions;
- complex: the dancers follow compound interactions, including body contact, harmonic collision, or even ball and stick.
The random variant was used to introduce a third-person perspective on the story of the app; the three-body mode allows you to create interesting movements for a stage performance; and the ball and stick interaction mode is a good simulation of animal collectives, such as the movements of fish schools or bird flocks.
For your own app development, you can use one of the predefined templates that represent the movements in the ballet or music styles.
Here are some examples of possible rules:
- dancers can move inside a rectangle;
- two dancers can rotate around a common center;
- a dancer can move backward or forward at a defined rate;
- three dancers can move counterclockwise or clockwise on a circle.
