History
AutoCAD was originally developed for the Apple II personal computer by Bill Tomasic, Steve Blankenbaker, and Jack Wineford. Tomasic hired a software engineer, Dan M. Porter, to code a CAD application for the Apple II.
In 1981, Winokur & Collins received the Apple II license from Apple to sell AutoCAD for the Apple II. The company also worked to improve and expand the AutoCAD software and supply it to other CAD users. In November 1982, AutoCAD 1.0 was released to retail. The first version of AutoCAD shipped on a floppy disk with the name "AutoCAD". The name was changed to Autodesk Autocad in August 1984.
In 1984, Winokur & Collins acquired the rights to AutoCAD from Apple.
In 1988, Autodesk became a public company.
