The earliest versions of AutoCAD were software applications, but since version 2.0, Autodesk has been releasing its products as services. In AutoCAD 2009 AutoCAD started storing the current selection state of each tool to the drawing. This allowed AutoCAD to preview the same image in multiple tools simultaneously. In later versions AutoCAD was able to use this information to move the insertion point during drawing operations.
