Biografi Chairil Anwar. Download as PDF. Chairil Anwar was born on July 26, 1922 in Medan, North Sumatra. This is a free English translation of the first chapter of Eikap: Kedulukan di Indonesia. His paternal grandmother was Japine Hatam and his grandfather was Amien Asnara; the latter was also a poet. In the 1930s, Anwar was active in the literary society Erkaman. He attended high school in Medan and in Jakarta, where he was a student of Adam Malik. On September 12, 1938, he married his first wife, Tisna Iskandariah, and they had four children. Chairil Anwar had many friendships in Medan and Jakarta. As a member of the Indonesia Democratic Party, he was acquainted with leftist Indonesian intellectuals, such as H.M. Kasiman. He wrote poetry and short stories as well as novels and some of his works had been published, most notably Indosari Utama (Indonesian Pioneer, 1944), Perjuangan (1946), Kejantanan (1951), Penghimpunan (1957), and Pengantar Budaya Indonesia (Indonesian Culture Introduction, 1962). He also translated works of other authors. Chairil Anwar died on January 4, 1995, in Jakarta, and his body was sent to Medan for burial. His grave is at Desa Ria Sambas cemetery in Medan.
