History
In the late 1980s, Steve Jobs and Steve Wozniak formed Intergraph and released Intergraph CADR (Computer Aided Drafting and Designing), which ran on Apple computers and an Apple-II emulator for the time. This included the ability to import and export to the Apple Lisa with the LisaDraw software, but the Apple-II emulator kept the Apple computer from being as fast as the original Lisa hardware.
In the early 1990s, Intergraph joined with Autodesk and offered its CADR software as a licensed Autodesk product. A variety of the new product release came in editions running on Macs, PCs, and DOS. In 1990, a version for the Apple Macintosh was also made available.
While Intergraph made a commitment to making a new graphical CADR for the Apple Macintosh, Steve Jobs was interested in making a new "serious" computer that included a graphical interface. The Apple Newton was born in 1993 after several years of design, but the Apple Newton had no CAD application.
By the late 1990s, Microsoft began releasing a variety of its own products in a similar vein. Autodesk was struggling to find a new market for its CADR software, and Intergraph offered an aging product for a license fee of $50,000 a year. As more and more of its customers shifted to Microsoft products, it made a costly decision to license AutoCAD, the most expensive of its desktop CADR software, to IBM, to create the first ever Microsoft Windows version.
IBM would later make an offer to purchase Autodesk. Rather than being paid for the code, Autodesk received $2.3 billion in stock and other equity and assumed debt. In August 1999, IBM then sold Autodesk to a holding company, The Buckingham, which formed a new company, Autodesk Inc.
The first successful AutoCAD release for the Windows platform was released as Release 11 in 1998. However, it was extremely expensive at $400, and most users did not like the new interface. With Release 12, Autodesk decided to make drastic changes to the interface. The Release 12 for Windows came in 1999, and it brought with it the innovative Autocad 2000.
