The numbers that are grouped within the parentheses or brackets become one unit. 
Associative property an only be used with addition and multiplication, but not with subtraction or division.

Examples: 
Addition  
4 + (5 + 3) = (4 + 5) + 3 = 12 
Multiplication 
(2 x 4) x 3 = 2 x (4 X 3) = 24
