Purpose of AutoCAD
AutoCAD and its predecessors are referred to as CAD programs, and the term "AutoCAD" is often used to mean the complete suite of AutoCAD products. In an interview, a technical writer for AutoCAD explained how AutoCAD differs from other CAD software:
Although the term "CAD" has been in use for decades, AutoCAD is the first widely used software for creating and editing graphical 2-D drawings. AutoCAD was originally developed to allow people to design things on their desktops using the programs of the time -- drawing and drafting programs such as Drawit and DraftSight -- without having to move to a large, room-sized mainframe. This was a significant improvement over the drawing and drafting work that had been done on mainframes.
Unlike most other drawing programs, AutoCAD lets users draw freehand on a 2-D drafting canvas. For example, a user can begin by drawing a circle, then add lines and other shapes to fill in the circle. The resulting drawing can then be edited on the fly, such as changing the size of the circle, adding points or modifying the line segments.

Autodesk introduced the following features in AutoCAD 2011:
 Scene geometry
 Scene geometry was first introduced in AutoCAD 2008, where it was available only for full-scene rendering. In AutoCAD 2011, a new viewer style called "Batch-style rendering" was introduced, allowing the specification of the view of the geometry in the scene to the viewer. Viewing a batch of geometries simultaneously is possible in two ways: "multiple renders" allows the user to view a scene in parallel, and the option of the view is kept up to date; "load a scene" allows the user to load the original scene that was used to create a batch, and have the batch reflected in the new view.
 Support for viewing B-rep data
 The ability to view parametric objects as B-rep was introduced in AutoCAD 2010, and was available as a standard feature in AutoCAD 2011. In AutoCAD 2011 a special Viewer style is available to directly view B-rep geometries.
 True continuous creation
 True continuous creation was introduced in AutoCAD 2010, allowing the automatic creation of new drawings upon changes in an existing drawing. In AutoCAD 2011 this has been improved, allowing the user to work on an existing drawing, without interrupting the auto-rendering.
