How to apply for OPT (Optional Practical Training)

International students need to receive authorization for OPT (Optional Practical Training) in order to engage in employment upon graduation. Follow the steps in this collection thoroughly to understand the important concepts of OPT and to file your OPT application on time. SUNY Oswego international students should coordinate with the International Student and Scholar Services Office to review all application materials and to obtain a new OPT-recommended Form I-20. Note that it takes the ISSS Office 5-7 days to review the required documents for Optional Practical Training. NOTE: As of Spring 2022 it is possible to complete the OPT application online, however, the ISSS Office ***very strongly recommends*** that you complete the paper OPT application that is physically mailed USCIS. This process is outlined below.
