The development of AutoCAD started in 1981, the year of the Canadian centennial. The first version of AutoCAD, known as AutoCAD 1, was developed by 17 AutoDesk employees in a basement, and released in 1983. It was originally available only for PCs running CP/M operating systems on minicomputers. When it first appeared, the app was targeted at users that needed to draw 2D plans.
