The Donald Trump phenomenon is unique and difficult to approach, especially when there are things he is saying we should hold him accountable for. We want to protect his freedom of speech but not give him anymore leeway than we would grant any another individual. I've had many discussion with friends about this topic matter. I always accept the challenge, because there are many circumstantial and situational factors to freedom of speech. In a country built on checks and balances, it is important to provide and grant freedoms. As a whole, I feel as if the American people keep others more in check than the court system itself. That is because most of the situations that come into play regarding Freedom of Speech are dealt with and discussed by the people in daily conversation over social media or in person. The Freedom of Speech truly does need people on both sides, defending it and pushing to hold more people accountable. According to Ken White, a Chicago Tribune contributor "Some of the most controversial and unpopular speech to come before the court — like videos of animals being tortured, or incendiary Westboro Baptist Church protests at funerals — have yielded solid 8-to-1 majorities in favor of protecting speech. There's no sign of a growing appetite for censorship on the court." While our courts are actively protecting free speech, citizens who disagree with Trump are more likely to want to censor him. Although he has committed multiple impeachable offenses, it still remains important to protect the freedom of speech and be aware of the censorship in which "big-tech" does get involved with. I would honestly encourage people to learn about the Freedom of Speech because it's a direct reflection of how the government was meant to be set up. If situations go to the court, they decide on cases, and they are more inclined to protect the freedom. Of course, they will prosecute if one does infringe on the Freedom of Speech, however my point is you need the opposing ideas to keep everyone in check with what they can and cannot say to others, in public, and on a global social platform. Having a mixed pool of citizens who push to hold people accountable and those who want to protect free speech is necessary and important to the future of the United States.
