History
AutoCAD was originally developed by the British company, Autodesk, Inc., as a commercial CAD system for the microcomputer market. It was originally called Autocad, a portmanteau of "autocad" and "draftsperson".
The first version of AutoCAD, Autocad II, was released for the Apple II personal computer on 30 December 1982, and was the first product of the British company Autodesk, Inc. Autocad II included only rudimentary drawing tools that were based on an earlier prototype named Fusion by the same company, which was released for the Apple II in 1980. The main development work on AutoCAD II was done at the company's UK research and development office.
Autocad's first release for the Apple Macintosh platform was in 1985, and is a word processor as well as a cad program. Autocad includes the ability to export to DWG and DXF files.
Autocad II followed, incorporating many of the ideas in Fusion and the later AutoCAD R14, but with some enhancements such as B-spline curve editing, 3D model creation, and the ability to import DWG files.
