DXF is a vector-based drawing format, based on ASCII art, introduced with AutoCAD 2002. It is used for modeling, rendering and printing, as well as for importing. DXF stands for Drafting Exchange Format.
Drawing and modeling information is stored in DXF files. The DXF format was designed for non-technical users to create complex drawings.
A DXF file contains drawing information in the form of G-codes, that are commands, usually in the form of “G54 G95” (that is, there are 54 vertical pixels, starting from the 54th horizontal pixel). Commands are organized in groups called "layers" and are further grouped in "sheets".
Layers 
Layers are the internal sub-divisions of the entire drawing. Each layer represents a different layer of the drawing. The idea behind this is that drawing objects from different layers can be combined and moved/arranged, but not removed or altered. This makes it much easier to create high-level design documents, such as floor plans, as there is much less chance of user data being altered or deleted accidentally. In fact, it is often possible to create layers for different people working on the same drawing, based on their respective areas of interest. For example, a customer may wish to see only the walls of a house, whereas an architect may wish to see all walls, floor and ceilings.
Layers are easy to define and maintain, and are easily exported and re-imported between different drawings.
Sheets 
Sheets are sub-layers of a layer. Each sheet represents a sheet in a drawing. The drawing is organized into sheets, each representing a different sheet. They are easy to add and delete, as well as move or arrange the objects. When several layers are defined within a single layer, the sheets are automatically organized into groups.
In previous versions of AutoCAD, the arrangement of layers and sheets was done manually, but with AutoCAD 2012 and later, they are automatically arranged according to the user's preferences.
