2. Description of the Related Art
For use in an industrial process environment, a process control system requires numerous valves, switches, pressure regulators, heat exchangers, process controllers and sensors, and, of course, the containers in which they are installed. The containers are typically made of steel, cast aluminum, stainless steel, brass, copper, plastic or any of a number of other suitable materials. The containers are often made in the shape of a cylinder, in a cylinder with a removable lid, or in the shape of an inverted truncated cone, where the diameter of the bottom is smaller than the diameter of the top.
Many process control systems, particularly in the chemical industry, are monitored and controlled from a single location, usually the factory's control room. To connect control panels and the process controllers to the valves and sensors, control cables must be run from the process controllers to the valves, and from the valves to the control panels. To allow the process controllers to control the flow of fluids, valves are often connected by hoses to the process controllers. Typically, the hoses are soldered to the process controllers, or some other convenient device is used to secure the hoses to the process controllers.
For very large systems, like those found in refineries, many control panels are grouped together, with each group having a number of process controllers connected to it. Hoses connect the process controllers to the valves, and many of the hoses run in parallel to each other.
Other connections are also made in the course of maintaining process control systems. For example, on very large systems, hoses are run from the valve boxes to the exterior of the plant, to allow process controllers to be mounted to the exterior of the plant.
In large systems, the hoses must be able to withstand the large pressures (e.g., up to 2,000 psi or more) and large thermal cycling temperatures (e.g., up to 200° F. or more) of the environment in which
