Training as a generalist is a challenge, so keeping up to date through general reading, research and conferences is essential. This summary takes the top tweets from #AAP19 to summarise the conference for myself and others.

I extracted tweets from my study in Edinburgh on the evening of 27 October 2019 using NodeXL (with a further extract planned 30 October after the conference is over). My methods are explained here. Further details on Twitter data from the conference are provided in this tweet thread.

Up to the point of the Twitter extract, analysing tweets posted on 25 and 26 October, and part of 27 October, there were 3,525 tweets by 643 tweeters with 4053 retweets. Overall 100 (16%) tweeters received 80% of retweets while 263 (41%) tweeters received no retweets. This is an overwhelming number of tweets to scroll through, but we can apply some simple rules to identify the most useful and/or controversial posts.

The top tweets from the first two days were identified as follows: 110 tweets were identified using the following rules - at least 5 retweets on 25 October, or at least 6 retweets on 26 October. I then excluded protest tweets, commercial tweets, spam and duplicate posts, leaving 95 tweets listed below chronologically. The subject of the protests - circumcision - was covered in a conference session, and content from that session is included in this summary.
