A thick and unstable layer of precipitated outflow has developed from the low pressure area off the coast at the northern end of the Tasman Sea during the past 24 hours. This outflow has resulted in the formation of large supercell type thunderstorms within a few hundred kilometres of Hobart.
The term "Supercell", is one of the most unstable forms of thunderstorm in which the convective cloud base develops into a lifting vortex (mesocyclone) associated with a shear layer. This vortex is drawn into the atmosphere by a low pressure downdraft which is most likely to occur in association with rapid vertical wind shear. Supercells may rotate around themselves, exhibiting balloon-like behaviour. The rotating updraft is referred to as a tornado, the most violent of such occurrences.
The winds are between 30 and 90 kts
The anabatic (buoyant) winds show a shallow layer of thin wind shear over the eastern half of Tasmania and a stronger shear layer is evident further north. Vertical wind shear is highest between 12 and 20 kts over the east, and grows progressively weaker towards the west.
The station-based winds aloft are very light, indicating that the air has become unstable at the surface. The 20-kts NNE of the storm will soon bring moist, unstable air into the region (the moist static energy being used up with precipitation falls back to the surface).
Some convective updrafts are already embedded into the area of wind shear evident to the east of the storm. As a result, the storm will be able to gain extra energy from the strong wind shear present in
