History
Development of the AutoCAD software began in 1978 at a time when the computer industry was making big strides in general and in graphics processing in particular.
AutoCAD is an acronym for Auto Computer-Aided Design, and is a portmanteau of two terms: "automated" and "computerized." AutoCAD is a complete drafting system that incorporates both 2D and 3D drawing, plotting, editing and printing features, as well as a full-featured DGN database. It supports both 2D and 3D drawings and allows users to work both from paper and from a computer monitor.
Development of AutoCAD was under the direction of Leslie E. Schowalter, an expert on CAD. The first version was completed in 1980. The original idea was to design a simple drafting system that would handle only paper drafting of architectural drawings, but later, the idea was expanded. AutoCAD 2.0 was released in 1983. It was still only an internal graphics program, but it became the first product for which the company marketed a name: "AutoCAD." The first version was introduced in December 1982. Since that time, the product has grown enormously in terms of its feature set and range of applications. Today, AutoCAD is the number one graphics and drafting software application for desktop PCs, and is used in a variety of industries, from the automotive, architecture, construction, furniture, and entertainment industries, to public safety and health, education, and engineering.
AutoCAD software is available in a variety of editions, ranging from free, to basic, to intermediate, and to professional, and in the cloud. An upgrade from one edition to another may be required in some cases. A new release of AutoCAD typically occurs every 12 to 18 months.
AutoCAD uses an integrated design environment approach to CAD, meaning that functions such as drawing, dimensioning, drafting, and cutting are integrated with other tools and workflows. It also includes integrated 3D functionality. Unlike the 2D CAD applications of the past, which typically integrated with applications designed for a specific job type, AutoCAD supports several application types for different areas of the design process, such as freehand drawing, architectural design, sheet metal design, and drafting, which are simply tools for a particular job type.

 In September 2011, AutoCAD was enhanced with features for using Apple products and Mac OS X.
 In August 2012, AutoCAD was enhanced with a number of Internet Explorer related features.
 In November 2012, AutoCAD was enhanced with a new user interface and more customization.
 In May 2015, AutoCAD was released with a new high-resolution rendering engine.
