Roblox is a free-to-play website which allows users to create their own games by programming them in a programming language called Lua. Users can then upload these games to the platform and play them. Roblox launched in December 2006 and has over 7 million registered users as of November 2014.
Roblox began when David and Erik Cassel, brothers who were both about 10 years old at the time, had a game they created called "Albatross". Albatross, a toy that would fly around a user's room and attack nearby controllers, was originally intended for only the boys to play. However, after the brothers realized they could sell it, they changed their plans and released it publicly. They decided to make it a free game due to its lack of a business model. The brothers didn't have much business experience, so they hired a friend to help them out with the game; Baszucki. Within four months of releasing Albatross, the brothers had sold more than 500 games and earned $5,000. The game was a success, and they decided to continue making more games. During this time, they were friends with the developer of Silly Sausage, but were unwilling to pay him to continue developing it. They instead decided to release it for free, and instead hired him to develop a platform based on that game that allowed for game development by users. The result was Roblox.
Roblox primarily consists of users who create user-based games. The users can create games in a variety of genres, including adventure, arcade, puzzle, battle and sports. They can program the games in Lua, a scripting language that runs on top of the game engine and allows users to easily modify the game during the game's development. There are a variety of game-related functions available to the developers, including lua functions that allow users to control the game's HUD, character, attack, and enable and disable the game's physics. Other functions include control functions that allow developers to add in custom code, and mechanics that allow developers to create in-game events and triggers.
Roblox developed a user-generated content system before getting popular, so their games are a mix of classic games and original creations. This means that Roblox has games that look similar to Mario and Zelda, but there are also games that
