CrashRpt is a light-weight error handling framework. The library intercepts Win32 structured exceptions, C++ typed exceptions and C run-time libraries errors generated by a user-mode program. The toolset is based on the four stages of error handling and post-processing:
• Detecting an error and generating an error report;
• Providing an user interface (UI) to report the error;
• Capturing the user feedback in a log file;
• Providing some post-processing tools, including: error, error_report and error_report_message generating functions.
As a result, users obtain an interface similar to the GUI application error reporting features. The library is not a debugging tool. It intercepts Win32 structured, C++ exceptions and C run-time libraries errors, but is not involved in the code execution. CrashRpt applies a set of error handling techniques in a specific programming language. The toolset is focused only on a small set of errors (Win32 structured, C++ exceptions and C run-time libraries errors) and is not a full-fledged, general-purpose error handling library.
The first version of CrashRpt is based on Visual C++ 2012 and Win32 and was developed by Alexander Peterkofsky. The library supported Visual C++ 2012 and 2014 versions and 32- and 64-bit Windows versions. The library can be easily upgraded to support a new version of Visual C++.
Based on the feedback from the users, the library was partially re-written and developed. These changes were made to make CrashRpt compatible with Visual C++ 2015 and Windows 10. The new version is based on C++14/17, uses a new error reporting framework and generates an error report file. If the error report file is correct, then the application terminates without the user interaction. The application is terminated regardless of the application status.
