Removing digital dust and scratches with the Clone Stamp
A _Clone Stamp_ is a tool that restores the original or previous layer and leaves the rest of the layer untouched. You can use the Clone Stamp to remove digital dust and scratches from your photographs. The Photoshop tools in this section and the next enable you to easily target unwanted elements on an image and copy them over to the new image.
Generally speaking, before using the Clone Stamp, you should always have an adjustment layer set to the color you want. This enables you to test the Clone Stamp before you use it to select and pull the color from the new layer to the original layer. When you're done editing the background, just delete the color adjustment layer.
This process doesn't always work perfectly, however. For example, a filter may be applied to the original layer that covers the damage from the dust or scratches. To remove that filter from the original image, you must either restore the original layer or create a new one. You may have to do both.
