AutoCAD History
AutoCAD is the third generation of CAD software from AutoDesk, Inc. The first was AutoCAD II, first released in 1984, which was for use on PCs. AutoCAD II had a database based on 3D objects that represented the shape of a part. This shape of a part (or feature) was then drawn on the AutoCAD screen.
The second CAD software to be introduced by AutoDesk was AutoCAD 3D. This was for the Macintosh computers and, although it was just a front-end for AutoCAD II, it was the first 3D CAD program to be released. AutoCAD 3D was released in October 1985 and was a key program for AutoDesk. The key innovation for AutoCAD 3D was its interaction with graphics hardware to allow realistic, dynamic modelling of a 3D scene. It used point clouds created by a computer's graphics hardware to calculate the positions of points in the real world, and these points were then assigned to a surface, object, or camera in the 3D scene. When an object was placed, it would appear to be created from the surrounding point clouds.
AutoDesk decided to re-engineer AutoCAD 3D into AutoCAD (originally called "AutoCAD Version 2"), first released in November 1986, to take advantage of the graphical power of personal computers. This new version of AutoCAD was able to interact with the graphical windows of the operating system, and could make any change in the environment the user wanted to see at any time. This allowed changes to be made without having to wait for the programs to "re-render" the screen.
AutoDesk then introduced AutoCAD 4D, first released in February 1988, to use the same innovation of AutoCAD 3D, but was for the Xerox Star computers, a personal workstation that was part of a group of computer workstations designed and sold by Xerox. This was not really a CAD program, but it provided a way to model a 3D scene and animate it in real time. In November 1989, AutoDesk released AutoCAD 4D-2, which was for the new Macintosh computers running System 7.5. Originally, Autodesk, Inc. developed a time-sharing computer system for the small and mid-sized businesses. As Autodesk grew, Autodesk Architecture (later known as ACIS) was created to replace it. This allowed Autodesk to focus on software design instead of the hardware, which had become a large portion of Autodesk's business.
In 2002, the company started a product line based on AutoCAD R14 architecture, known as AutoCAD Architecture, AutoCAD Electrical, AutoCAD Mechanical, AutoCAD Civil 3D.
In 2006, Autodesk released the desktop software AutoCAD WS (Web Services) which could communicate with other applications over the Internet.
In 2008, Autodesk announced AutoCAD Architecture 2008 (R18), AutoCAD Electrical 2008 (R16) and AutoCAD Mechanical 2008 (R16). AutoCAD 2008 is supported by the most recent AutoCAD software products, AutoCAD R16 and earlier. The Autodesk Systems Architect Certification offered by Autodesk Academy and Autodesk University was also replaced with the Autodesk Certified Design Automation Professional (CDAP) certification for AutoCAD Architecture 2008 and AutoCAD Electrical 2008. The certification is offered by Autodesk.
In 2011, Autodesk released AutoCAD Civil 3D 2011 (R14) and AutoCAD Mechanical 2011 (R14). AutoCAD Civil 3D was a major upgrade from AutoCAD Civil 3D 2009 (R11).
