The film follows Peter Parker, who struggles to balance his ordinary life as a high school student in Queens with his extraordinary life as the superhero Spider-Man. After his uncle's death, Peter resolves to regain control over his life. He asks May to be his partner, but her guilt over her late husband's death causes her to turn him down. Peter receives a mysterious package containing his new Spider-Man costume that he can use to fight crime. After one use, he is visited by the enigmatic, enigmatic character Norman Osborn. Osborn, who is in an organization called the "Green Goblin", tells Peter that he has been chosen to be the "chosen one" as the next Spider-Man, and that he will bring about Spider-Man's death. Osborn is the father of Peter's best friend Harry Osborn. When Peter refuses to be Osborn's pawn, Osborn threatens to destroy the city with his Goblin army. After being saved by his classmates, Peter realizes he has no choice but to become Spider-Man to protect his friends and himself.

It is the last major motion picture released by the company of James Cameron, who had previously directed The Terminator (1984), Aliens (1986), and Avatar (2009), and the last major motion picture for Emma Stone, who had previously starred in Charlie's Angels (2000) and La Femme Nikita (2001).
