Macon-Bibb Commission Jan. 17, 2023
Macon-Bibb County Commissioners funded $250,000 in emergency repairs to broken pipes at the South Bibb Recreation Center, agreed to a joint freight study with GDOT, made board appointments and held the mayor pro tem election. The commission recognized the winners of the MLK oratory competition and honored the students in the Elite Leadership Academy of the Next Level Community Development program of Bibb Mt. Zion Baptist Church. Frequent public commenter Rev. Lydia Mitcham Meredith thanked the mayor and commissioners and Sheriff David Davis for adding law enforcement officers, but asked commissioners to investigate District Attorney Anita Reynolds Howard due to the level of crime in the community, accused criminals being out on bond and the departure of several veteran prosecutors from the DA's staff. Commissioners Al Tillman and Elaine Lucas defended Howard at the end of the meeting. Commissioners also heard from Lisa Thomas, the mother of Lake Tobesofkee boating accident victim Tyler Raye Renard Moss. Thomas thanked the county for changes made to improve boating safety at the lake and asked that her son be remembered with some sort of permanent memorial. Keenan SPECIAL Bristol also informed commissioners about his goal to raise thousands of pints of blood from minority communities through his Music Brings Life organization. Here are highlights in a series of tweets sent during the meeting.
