AutoCAD History: From Its Early Years to Today
AutoCAD began as CadSys, the first personal computer-based CAD program developed by AutoDesk. The first public demonstration of CadSys was held at the 1984 Las Vegas auto show where an engineer used a high-resolution laser pointer and a large wall-sized display to project a three-dimensional view of a Mercedes Benz Vito automobile onto the screen of a desktop Apple II computer. These early demonstrations showcased the CAD capability of the new CAD software.
By 1985, Autodesk had developed its first commercial CAD product, AutoCAD, for the Apple II, Macintosh, IBM PC, and Xerox Network Services (XNS) computer platforms. In 1987, the first software for the workstation platform was released. Originally, the first Macintosh and XNS CAD software were both under the product name of AutoCAD for Workgroups. It wasn’t until the 1990s that the desktop and workstation versions of AutoCAD were rebranded as AutoCAD, and the Macintosh versions were rebranded as AutoCAD for Mac.
AutoCAD was originally designed to work exclusively with raster-based graphics displays. However, with the advent of vector graphics displays, newer software was released which allowed AutoCAD to use vector graphics instead of raster graphics. Today, almost all AutoCAD users use vector graphics.
AutoCAD for Web Applications
In 1994, the first release of AutoCAD for Web Applications (AWA) was released. With the development of the Internet and World Wide Web, AutoCAD had become a browser-based application.
In the fall of 2004, the Autodesk University presented a new digital media and Web 2.0 program entitled, AutoCAD 360°. With its development, Autodesk took an innovative approach to turning AutoCAD into a true Web 3.0 application. Along with innovative web technologies, the new Autodesk 360° program was designed to look at the world in 360-degrees. Along with a 3D representation of the world in AutoCAD, Autodesk also introduced social networking sites. Users were able to join projects using a free Adobe Flash plugin.
Autodesk is also currently developing a version of AutoCAD for mobile devices. Called AutoCAD Mobile, this application will be able to operate on smartphones and tablet PCs.
