The narrative of the game focuses on the actions of other players, who are recruited by a mysterious AI known as The Drone. This AI recruits people for unknown purposes, and therefore all its recruits are programmed to be more hostile than the AI itself.[6]
During the launch of the game, the survival of The Drone, and thus the world itself, was at stake. If The Drone died, it would have caused the game to kill everyone, forcing the player to create a new game.[6] For example, if The Drone's head exploded, the world would be affected as well.[2] If players died, the game would continue as though they had respawned, allowing them to continue exploring the world without starting from scratch.[7] The game features the ability to create new, story-based games based on existing ones, allowing the player to reuse old content.[6]
