The AutoCAD program began in the early 1980s. In 1983, the first commercially available CAD program, by the name Micrografx DWG System (DWG = Dimensional Graphic System), was developed and marketed by Micrografx. This AutoCAD-like program was available for the IBM Personal Computer (PC) family of microcomputers. When the DWG System was discontinued in 1985, Autodesk acquired the rights to the DWG System and released AutoCAD in December 1983.
A major re-design of AutoCAD was released on November 1, 1996 (v. 1.1). While the 1.1 release was backward compatible with v. 1.0 and v. 2.0, the new release featured the top level architecture, a new drawing manager, and major improvements in features, the user interface, and ease-of-use. A release of AutoCAD, dubbed AutoCAD 2000, was released on September 4, 1998, and provided some improvements to the features, usability, and ease-of-use of the product.
In 1999, Autodesk released a major update to AutoCAD (AutoCAD R14) to address a variety of issues with the 1.1 release. This release was a significant improvement over the 1.1 release in some areas, such as some significant changes in the drawing manager, and ease-of-use, in addition to the top level architecture.
By the late 1990s, the new top level architecture of AutoCAD had been tested and used by many users in production applications. It was used in the publishing industry for producing blueprints, and by the entertainment industry, such as in film, for designing special effects.
In 1997, Autodesk announced a new AutoCAD release (AutoCAD 2004) under development. This AutoCAD release, which has not been released, is still in development and not available for use by consumers. Some features included in this new release are the ability to read and write files that use the more common DWG 2.0 format, improvement in the graphical appearance of lines, the ability to edit 3D surfaces, and additional file support.
