This is the first of two articles looking at the fundamentals of AutoCAD. The following articles will focus on getting started with AutoCAD 2019, including the ways to get a free trial version.
The AutoCAD Basics
The following are the basic skills and knowledge you need to work with AutoCAD and other Autodesk applications:
Basic Knowledge of Windows and the Windows command line
Knowledge of how to work with drawings, blocks, layers, and text
Knowledge of how to create and edit forms, tags, blocks, and blocksets
Knowledge of how to use the drawing toolbar and keyboard shortcuts
Knowledge of what parts of the user interface are for and what are for inputting drawing commands
Knowledge of how to organize drawings

AutoCAD Trial
When you start the trial, you will be prompted to make a decision to either buy the full version or cancel the trial. If you decide to buy the trial, you will need to register for an Autodesk account, which can be done by clicking here.
Once your Autodesk account has been created, you can complete your registration by clicking here.
This will bring you to the AutoCAD home page where you will be prompted to register or sign in.
Once you have signed in, click on the Install button.
This will take you to the AutoCAD installer where you will see the information about your computer and the Operating System.
This will also show you the location of your Autodesk product key and your license serial number. Your license will have to be checked upon first use to access your product key.
The installer should start downloading. Depending on your Internet speed, the process will take between 30 minutes and an hour.
The AutoCAD installer will start downloading AutoCAD 2019 desktop software. This will be the first time you see the AutoCAD 2019 installer in AutoCAD. The installer will ask you to confirm your product key and license information.
If you have already created a user account at Autodesk, you will be automatically signed in to your Autodesk account and all of the information in the installer will be the information you provided while signing into your Autodesk account.

Automatically creating and assigning functions (subroutines) 
 AutoCAD assigns certain functions (subroutines) to keys on the keyboard. As a user programs AutoCAD, he or she can assign these functions to keys on the keyboard. AutoCAD makes the programmer's job easier by automatically assigning functions to keys so that the programmer can focus on writing the drawing itself rather than writing the functions. These are called pre-defined keyboard shortcuts. Examples of pre-defined keyboard shortcuts are:
 A selection of object properties (e.g. text style) can be applied to any object with a single keystroke (e.g. you can select text in a line by pressing the 'c' key).
 You can insert a section plane by pressing Ctrl + 1 (all standard keys are available). This can be done by going to Properties –> Fit –> Insert Section.

AutoCAD has a number of tools for programming, called the "command languages" (AutoLISP, VBA, Visual LISP, ObjectARX). These tools have a number of features for automating drawing processes, as well as performing other tasks.
Web services 
Since version 2013, AutoCAD offers a dedicated Web services API. Web services are XML-based communication protocols. They are typically used by third-party developers and information systems. Web services allow an application to be dynamic and network-independent. The Web services API allows software developers to create AutoCAD services such as a web service that the AutoCAD client (AutoCAD 2012, AutoCAD LT, Autodesk Inventor or any version of AutoCAD Architecture) can communicate with. The AutoCAD client uses the Web services API to communicate with services. This enables AutoCAD to support connected applications.
Starting with AutoCAD 2017, the Web Services API is the only way to update AutoCAD drawings from the web.
