Level is a real-time tactical simulation designed to be played in either local or online mode. With a focus on tactical gameplay and no room for head-turning graphics, it’s a game that offers plenty of value for money without being overly demanding on the hardware.
Level is an uncompromising first person action game where you control a squad of soldiers moving across a landscape overrun by enemy forces. Your objective is to clear out areas for friendly soldiers by moving to a location, eliminating enemies, and then moving on.
You control a squad of 3 to 5 soldiers who move using a realistic physics engine. Each soldier has a speed, range, strength, defense, and accuracy rating and, as they use their weapons, their accuracy decreases.
It’s possible to combine different squads to work together. When combined, they can either attack or defend other areas. This gameplay model, paired with the tactical elements, ensure it’s not just a game about running from one objective to the next but about working out a strategy and gaining the upper hand.
If you lose a squad of soldiers, they’ll either return to the HQ, if you’re currently there, or you’ll need to choose them a new squad and send them to an evacuation point.
There’s also a game mode where players need to keep up a supply of ammunition. Both soldiers and units use up ammo at a certain rate and you need to replenish the supply. This leads to a number of challenges that are good for getting players out of their comfort zone and developing new strategic abilities.
The emphasis on tactical gameplay means that you can plan strategic moves. While you can launch a single unit from a safe location and then move to where it’s needed, you can also place units on a nearby wall, at varying distances, and then have it jump over the wall in one go. There’s also the ability to place line of sight blockers to prevent units from being detected until it’s too late.
There’s also a standard level editor that enables players to create their own levels. You can include new units and abilities and you can have them follow a path and then attack an enemy or a player
