History
AutoCAD was released in December 1982, and was the first widely used (but not the first commercially released) CAD program. Prior to its release, some design work would be done using magnetic tape or punch cards. Many designers began using AutoCAD as a replacement for these programs. (Some of the first AutoCAD users were printers who used the software to produce drawings to send to the printing press.) The magnetic tape storage used in earlier CAD programs was not compatible with AutoCAD, and AutoCAD used a different method for storing data internally. When the Data Management Network (DMN) was introduced in 1985, it was the first network CAD package.
Introduced for the first time in version 2.0, the object-based technology was quickly adopted. (However, the success of object-based technology is debatable.) The use of objects led to the growth of CAD professionals who were familiar with the object-based system, as it was the only common method for storing data among the CAD users.
As AutoCAD grew, the number of users increased, and version 2.5 introduced an increased memory capacity to store data. The number of user features increased with version 3.0, which introduced many features to help with the use of CAD, including the ability to plot geometry with a single click, the ability to display a wireframe with a line of sight and plan views, and the ability to search for objects through a feature called search and replace. In 1988, version 4.0 was released, which included the first native PDF support for viewing, printing, and annotations.
The version numbering system for AutoCAD applications was altered in 1990 to include letters representing the year of a new major release. The numbering system has continued and as of AutoCAD 2020, the latest version of AutoCAD, it is numbered from "2020", with a letter appended as needed. In other words, AutoCAD 2020 is version "Y2020".

AutoCAD Architecture 2015 was the last release of AutoCAD Architecture; the AutoCAD community chose to continue supporting a separate product, AutoCAD Mechanical. AutoCAD Mechanical was the result of the combination of Dynamic Objects technology and the original Dynamic Blocks technology.
AutoCAD Architecture 2015 contained a completely rewritten drawing engine. It featured an improved Quick & Easy Extensibility Architecture (QEAA), allowing non-graphic elements to be introduced into a drawing with minimal programming.
