The film is inspired by the 1996 American crime thriller film Jackie Brown, and also features Tanvi Azmi, Rahul Dev Anand and Manoj Bajpayee in prominent roles.
The film marks the directorial debut of Gupta, who wrote the screenplay and co-produced the film with Sanjay Gupta and Shobha Kapoor. Principal photography began on 12 July 2010 and was completed on 30 July 2010. The film was released in the U.K. and Canada on 26 January 2011.
Plot
Jessica (Vidya Balan) is a high-class lawyer in Mumbai, India. She has a fiancé, Karan (Manoj Bajpayee), and is working at law firm Taneja & Associates. She lives with her mother, Bharati (Rani Mukerji), who is a highly respected lawyer and Taneja's Senior Partner, and a loyal supporter of Karan. When she discovers that her life is under threat, she ends up meeting Bollywood actor Rahul Dev Anand (Rahul Dev), whom she develops feelings for.
Police investigate Jessica's murder after learning about a pile of unclaimed cash on Karan's table. They also discover the extortion of an American businessman, Richard Farley (Tanvi Azmi), whose family is found murdered. As the plot twists and turns, Karan, Jessica and Richard Farley are all forced to work together in order to clear the three of them from suspicion and to discover the truth behind Jessica's murder.
