I passed by a small movie theater, which sat shuttered for the entirety of the pandemic with the words "See you again soon" spelled out on the marquee. I've walked by this classic old-timey movie house a million times, but this was different. The smell of popcorn hit my nose with electric force. A wave of nostalgia overcame me. This is all to set up a prescient article in The Washington Post that speaks to the irreplaceable importance of a theater-going audience. I believe that acknowledging history is one of the ways to progress forward - no matter how ugly it can get at times. Juneteeth is significant to me because the remaining African American's were granted freedom; essentially having as much significance as the 4th of July. What the NPR article highlights is the history of this day and the awareness of change not being immediate. With the news of Juneteenth being declared a national holiday, I believe this is a great informative essay. Christian Eriksen collapsed on the pitch during a Euro Cup match this last weekend and his heart stopped. He was being administered CPR on the field in attempts to revive him. Immediately, on Twitter and other social media outlets, there was a huge and positive outpouring of love and well wishes. I have been heavily involved in the soccer community here, but in moments like this it was about all the emotions that can be brought out by just caring for another human being you've never met without realizing the wonderful impact you have on others. Seemingly, Christian Eriksen should be OK, following surgery and rehab, but his career is likely over at the age of 29. In the moment of his collapse, it did seem like the entire world had one purpose, one direction, and that was to heal one man.
