Drawing tools, layers, and linetypes
AutoCAD includes tools for drawing rectangles, circles, and arcs, and features preset shapes. Features include textured fill, gradients, hatch patterns, and variable resolution (i.e., sharpness of edges). The autolayout (automatic document sizing and placement) feature allows automatic layout of documents. This is useful for documents that have fixed sizes, such as engineering drawings and printed labels.
The drawing tools and layer palette enable the operator to group objects, as well as mask, make solid, and select and edit individual lines and features. The drawing tools include a ruler, grid, guides, scribe, and snap. The snap feature is used to draw features to specific points.
Layers are groups of objects that can be made visible or hidden, and the operator can select and edit the line style of individual objects. The layer palette includes 16 layers that can be assigned to groups and made visible and hidden.
Linetypes are sets of predefined line patterns that can be applied to any object in the drawing. AutoCAD has 11 built-in linetypes, with more being available as add-on packages.
