History of AutoCAD

AutoCAD is a technical drafting software program. Before AutoCAD, most drawings were produced by manual drafting. Some early CAD systems allowed the user to draw one drawing at a time, but most were interactive; the user could create each layer of a drawing, edit the drawing, zoom in and out, pan around, and have the drawing printed and faxed. To this day, AutoCAD continues to be a popular choice for technical designers.
AutoCAD debuted in 1982, but the first CAD tool wasn’t developed by a company but by a fan of CAD. In 1980, Robins Software released an early version of CAD, which was used for architectural drafting. Because of the popularity of Robins, a few years later in 1982, Autodesk acquired Robins and repurposed it into AutoCAD.
AutoCAD was originally available only for the Apple II series, the first popular personal computer, but when Microsoft released Windows for Workgroups in 1992, AutoCAD was added.
Versions of AutoCAD
Desktop versions of AutoCAD are designed to work with the powerful computers that were introduced in the late 1980s and early 1990s. Due to advances in the computer industry, AutoCAD is designed to work with all the major operating systems, including Windows, Mac OS, and Linux. There are several versions of AutoCAD that are used in various industries: AutoCAD LT, AutoCAD LT for Windows, AutoCAD Standard, AutoCAD Classic, AutoCAD LT Standard, AutoCAD LT for Mac, AutoCAD Premier, AutoCAD LT Premier, AutoCAD for Windows, AutoCAD for Mac, AutoCAD for Linux, and AutoCAD for iOS.
Desktop/mobile versions of AutoCAD use the same program interface and design tools. Mobile versions are available for iPhone and Android devices.
