Autodesk introduced the first commercially available CAD package, AutoCAD, in 1989. The company's name was AutoCAD LT Computer Aided Design. The name CAD was used to refer to all three products, starting with AutoCAD LT.
In 1994, an offshoot of the AutoCAD team created AutoCAD LT Design Data Base (ADDB) as a better-looking version of the base product. The product was renamed AutoCAD 2000 Design Data Base in 1997.
In 1998, Autodesk acquired small software developer Epicor Software Corporation and renaming it to 3ds. This toolset included a family of applications for building CAD workflows and managing data. 3ds was sold off to private equity firm, Core Equity Partners in January 2001.
Autodesk retained ownership of AutoCAD and 3ds until 2006. At that time, Autodesk spun out a CAD division, retaining ownership of AutoCAD and 3ds. The name was changed to Autodesk as it was not to be confused with Autodesk Entertainment. In 2007, Autodesk sold its software division to private equity firm Advent International.
