The very first AutoCAD file was the drawing of a house. The name Autocad was thought up by a programmer in the Autodesk London office named Andy Cha. There are many examples of CAD professionals being trained or being hired by Autodesk for its CAD programs. Many current employees of Autodesk were either trained or hired by Andy Cha, who was also the one who thought of the name Autocad.
There were no plans for AutoCAD before 1982. In fact, the software was named DX-90 and was intended for use only by the largest engineering firms. Andy was not even supposed to work on the project. However, he decided to have a go and the program was released to the public in December 1982. The program was a great success, with thousands of copies being sold in the first year alone. The first version of AutoCAD ran on the Xerox Alto, an experimental computer. For the next few years it ran on the Motorola 68000.
To this day, the software is still sold on a wide range of platforms. It is a huge success, with over 100 million copies of AutoCAD sold as of 2013, as of version 2014. While the most prominent platform for AutoCAD is still the personal computer, the rise of mobile and tablet computers has also contributed to the platform’s success. Tablets and mobile devices, however, have now overtaken personal computers in terms of sales.
AutoCAD is used for 3D-CAD, 2D drafting, architectural design and programming. AutoCAD software provides simple to very complex features, including but not limited to the following.

Some of the basic features of AutoCAD include rectangular and free-rotation box drawing, contour editing, perspective, snap to objects, dimensioning, angle and distance measuring, block partitioning and editing, objects selection and merging, copy and paste, special properties, as well as automatic lining and text.
Each object can be shaped into any of the basic shapes such as rectangles, polygons, circles, ellipses, ovals, splines and arcs. Most objects in AutoCAD can also be modified into freehand. The different types of drawing objects are also used in different circumstances. For instance, the rectangle is the most common shape used in the horizontal and vertical orientation.
