After drawing the idea of AutoCAD in 1977, it took more than a decade for Autodesk to develop its CAD software.
AutoCAD was originally developed by a small team of three programmers at the Seiler Spring Company in Vancouver, Canada. They had intended to make their CAD system work under the Unix operating system, but quickly realized they had been successful with their goal. Their efforts were soon noticed by larger companies and AutoCAD was incorporated as Autodesk, Inc. in April 1983. As of 2019, Autodesk is owned by Chinese technology giant, Tencent.[2]
The basic features and usage of AutoCAD were determined by market research.[3] Four primary criteria were measured: (1) ease of drawing, (2) capability of managing drawings, (3) scope of the applications and (4) costs. Based on the results, the market research led Autodesk to conclude that the best way to gain market share was through a system which would be easy to learn and relatively inexpensive. This meant that the drafting program would be developed with the focus on producing drawings quickly and accurately.
The name "AutoCAD" was chosen due to the fact that it was already in common use. The intent was to promote Autodesk's product line by using a name that had been frequently used for other products, both by Autodesk and third parties.[4] The drawings produced by AutoCAD were originally named with a suffix of ".DWG" for Desktop Writable Graphics. By 1982, the graphics files were standardized and renamed "DWG". They also offered a text description of the drawing (called "Master Text") that was useful for searching and naming the files.[5]
At the time Autodesk released AutoCAD, Computer Aided Design was commonly used by architects, engineers, and drafters to create plans, parts of parts, and other geometric designs. There was no single approach that was used for most CAD applications. The first programs used a text interface to the operating system, a method which had become standard for CAD programs. However, with the rise of the graphical user interface, many new CAD programs also used a graphics user interface which allowed the user to manipulate the objects of their design.
By 1984, AutoCAD was considered unique because of its ability to function independently of operating system.[6] This allowed the user to be the designer of the software program, allowing the creation of

Architecture 
AIA standards have been adopted by the industry to provide common terminology and terms of agreement for architectural design and documentation. The DIN standard has been adopted to provide documentation standards for architects. The BCA Standard defines a process for design and documentation.
 Audio 
AutoCAD supports the playback of audio files and the creation of its own audio files. It also allows output of audio files such as WAV, MP3, WMA, AAC and OGG.
The new audio engine in AutoCAD 2013 introduced a new process for the creation of audio in AutoCAD, rather than using Audio Clip editors.
 AutoLISP 
AutoLISP is an AutoCAD API. It was originally developed by the Autodesk division of Computer Associates. The goal of AutoLISP was to extend the capabilities of AutoCAD by providing an API to allow AutoCAD to be extended by developers, who could then create their own applications using AutoLISP and its functions. The actual engine has been in use since AutoCAD R11 and became the standard CAD API. New extensions for AutoLISP have become available on the AutoCAD Exchange. 
The later versions of AutoLISP have gone through a number of code refactors and new functions to make it a more stable and easier to develop with environment. The AutoLISP source code is available for use and modification.
AutoLISP has been used by a wide range of users and companies, and has been the basis for a number of third-party AutoCAD extensions, including many commercially available products. Some of the most popular products based on AutoLISP are Design Innovator, JetDraw and Autodesk NetView.
 Graphic arts 
AutoCAD and AutoCAD LT can be used to create graphics for a number of purposes. It is often used to create the high-level design such as the project flow or sheet flow diagram, the part or assembly drawing, etc. It can also be used to create the technical drawings such as for piping systems, HVAC layouts, building construction drawings, etc.
AutoCAD can export to several graphic file formats. It can also create vector graphics such as DWG and DXF. For laying out and editing the layout graphics, the ACIS version supports the use of the "ACIS Layout" extension.
