Principal's Desk

Student engagement was identified as one of the top priorities this spring at the culmination of the community stakeholder meetings throughout our school division.  The importance of student engagement may appear self-evident for effective schools but the actualization of student engagement is not easily achieved and only occurs when teachers provide the structures and opportunities that grab student attention and motivate them to be engaged in their learning.  One method used to increase student engagement is authentic learning experiences.  Recently, Mr. Brown's social studies students in grades 5-9 immersed themselves into the Student Vote program and I dare say that they know more about the candidates than I do.  Also, this past week our grade 3/4 class completed their Nine Square project with a presentation to our School Council and myself (pictured above).  These students were highly engaged in collecting, organizing, analyzing, and presenting informantion that had real consequences for our school.  As we move forward, our teachers will continue to seek out authentic learning experiences that support student engagement.
