AutoCAD was the first CAD program to offer computer-aided drafting (CAD), or what most people think of as drafting, as an option. Subsequent CAD programs added features to allow users to draw 2D, 3D, or vector graphics, and some CAD programs offer only one type of graphics, such as only 2D or only 3D.
AutoCAD is still used by many professionals in design and architecture, and in other fields where traditional drafting was previously used.

Autodesk has released several significant updates to AutoCAD since 2013. The updated version is for AutoCAD LT and has been called AutoCAD LT 2019. AutoCAD LT 2018 is available for perpetual license. AutoCAD LT 2017 is available for perpetual license and perpetual license upgrade. AutoCAD LT 2016 is available for perpetual license, perpetual license upgrade, and 5-year upgrade. AutoCAD LT 2015 is available for perpetual license, perpetual license upgrade, and 5-year upgrade. AutoCAD LT 2014 is available for perpetual license, perpetual license upgrade, and 5-year upgrade.

Publishing model
CAD vendors and third-party companies are able to publish Autodesk CAD software and add-on applications to Apple iOS, Android, Windows, macOS and Linux and Microsoft Windows-based browsers such as Chrome and Internet Explorer. iOS apps have been available since version 7.0 (iPhone OS), while Windows apps have been available since the 4.3 (Windows Phone OS) release. In 2015, the Autodesk Exchange Apps support was extended to support mobile and desktop apps for macOS and Linux.
There are two mobile app stores where Autodesk Exchange Apps can be sold. The first is the Apple App Store and the second is the Google Play Store.
Exchange Apps are available free of charge and are designed to automate certain processes in AutoCAD and related products (e.g., AutoCAD Mechanical) and allow users to share projects and data with other CAD users. Exchange Apps are developed using Autodesk's C++ SDK and HTML5/JavaScript. The SDK is also integrated into many third-party tools and applications, including Abaqus, Bluebeam, Aras, 3ds, Blender, Claris, Collada Exchange, Dassault Systems, DreamCatcher, Epicor, Matlab, OpenSCAD, Ordina, OpenVDB, Revit, Slic3r, SolidWorks, Unity, etc.
Autodesk Exchange Apps are supported for the long-term, however, updates are no longer supported for iOS (Autodesk Exchange Apps for iOS) or Windows Phone (Autodesk Exchange Apps for Windows Phone), while macOS (Autodesk Exchange Apps for macOS) and Linux support are experimental and require an Exchange Apps license.
To avoid the need to publish Exchange Apps on each respective platform, Autodesk has also released a Windows Store App platform (Autodesk Exchange Apps for Windows Store). However, only users with Autodesk Exchange Apps for iOS or Autodesk Exchange Apps for Windows Phone can use this platform. Autodesk Exchange Apps for Windows Store are supported and hosted by Windows IoT Core.
Autodesk Exchange apps for Apple iOS and Android are written with native Objective-C or Java code and managed through the Apple App Store or Google Play Store respectively.
Android and iOS Exchange apps are downloadable from the respective stores and are either free or in-app purchases are available.
