AutoCAD was first announced on July 31, 1982 by Autodesk during the International Design Conference (IDC) in Las Vegas. The application was initially available as a beta version, and could be downloaded from the Autodesk website.
The first official release of AutoCAD in December 1982 for the PC DOS environment on IBM-compatible computers with a dedicated graphics display. This version of AutoCAD was code-named Barco. AutoCAD's popularity grew rapidly and, by 1988, around 7% of all CAD packages worldwide were using AutoCAD.
The first modern release of AutoCAD, in 1990, included the ability to import, edit, and export to the native format of the imported file, enabling users to copy their file to another machine, as well as to send files to AutoCAD through fax or e-mail.
The 2nd generation of AutoCAD was released in 1991, featuring a relational database and CAD data import and export capabilities. This allowed for changes to be made to the data, such as scaling or rotating, after the CAD model was initially imported.
