What is Industrial Action?
A Strike, also known as Industrial action or labour strike, is defined as “a period of time when workers refuse to work because of an argument with an employer about working conditions, pay levels, or job losses”

A strike is usually carried out with the backing of a Workers Union which were established in the 1830s to stop employers mistreating their workforce, if the employee and employer have a disagreement over an area such as rise in pay an employee can go to his union and discuss acting as a group in the form of a strike. Ultimately, the aim of the strike is to force your employers to listen to your demands and take them into consideration.

The benefit of striking as part of a union is that you are protected from losing your job if everything is carried out in the correct way, such as being part of an organised ballot and the dispute is between workers and their employers. If you are then fired within 12 weeks of your industrial action you can claim unfair dismissal at a tribunal. 
Industrial action can be carried out many ways, some strikes occur in the form of a walkout such as those carried out by the miners in the mid 80’s. These Miners rallied together and ‘picketed’ to oppose the closure of the coal pits; an action that would put 1000’s out of jobs. While some of the strikes around the country were peaceful, a lot turned violent between the police and the miners (Bannock, 2015).
