Explain how the annotations you created support visual literacy. What did you think through, what do you want us as viewers to learn?
Many of us still think of climate change as something abstract, something that is happening to animals we've never seen in person (except for maybe in the zoo), something that is increasing severe weather events and may cause food shortages and increase in diseases in the future, but if we haven't felt the impacts of it on our personal lives it is easy to go on about your business and act if this is happening somewhere else or might happen in the future. My idea was to provoke thought by putting a face to climate change. I wanted to first show the general impacts of climate change, and then talk about what it does to whole communities. My annotations, specifically the ones about the Yup'ik peoples are supporting visual literacy because they are not telling you just that erosion is caused by climate change - instead, they are showing you the faces of the people that are impacted with it so severely they have to relocate their entire community. The idea behind my project was to educate about the Yup'ik people, evoke compassion, and get us to think how we've might've contributed to the hurdles they are now forced to go through.
Similarly, with my annotations on the polar bear image, my goal was not to just inform about what is happening to their habitats because of global warming, but encourage the viewer to think how each of us can take personal responsibility for the part we've played and try to do something about.
