AutoCAD was conceived and created in the late 1970s by John Walker (John/Jack) and John Warnock, who founded what would become Autodesk. After releasing the first version of AutoCAD in 1982, Autodesk became a publicly traded company on the NASDAQ in 1988. When it was spun off from Autodesk in 1999, it became its own independent company, which continues to be privately held.

The first version of AutoCAD was based on the Sibelius document preparation program. Sibelius was written by Rick O'Dell and John Warnock, a programmer and an artist, respectively, at the Computer Graphics Corporation (CGC). CGC hired them to write a document preparation program for drawing up architectural plans, working from a set of punch-outs. Sibelius was released in December 1979 and sold for $99. It could only draw floor plans and would be driven by a large mainframe. Warnock and O'Dell named their new program after Sibelius because they liked the title of their employer's product. They renamed Sibelius to something they could more easily spell: AutoCAD.
A small number of AutoCAD owners, many of them employed by Autodesk, formed a user group to share ideas and problems with other users. When a more serious problem needed to be addressed, the group could then hire outside help to fix the issue. The user group was eventually incorporated as Autodesk Incorporated in 1985.

By the time John and Jack were looking to replace Sibelius, one of the more popular desktop applications was a program called Plotter II, developed by Plotter International, a Cambridge, Massachusetts-based consulting firm. They approached Plotter about converting AutoCAD to run on the faster and more reliable ZX80 microprocessor. They had learned of its existing use on the Apple II, so they asked Plotter to port it to the Apple. The Apple version of Plotter II was first released in November 1980, two months before AutoCAD 1.0.
