The first recorded attempt to run greyhounds on a straight track was at the Welsh Harp Reservoir in Hendon, England in 1876, but this experiment failed. The industry appeared in its recognizable modern form of round or oval caterpillars with the invention of the mechanical or artificial rabbit in 1912 by American Owen Patrick Smith. O. P. Smith had altruistic goals for the industry to stop the killing of rabbits and to see greyhound racing as we see horse racing 6. In 1919, Smith opened the first grandstand professional greyhound track in Emeryville, California. Emeryville Arena was demolished in February 1920 to make way for a modern racetrack, using a mechanical decoy described in the press as an automatic rabbit. The first competitions in the new park took place on Saturday, May. 29 of 19209 The certificate system in the United States in the 1930s paved the way for comprehensive wagers such as careers and gambling. The oval track and mechanical rabbit were introduced to Britain in 1926 by another American, Charles Mann, along with Canadian Major Lynn-Dixon, who was a central figure in coursing. It proved rather difficult to find other supporters, however, and as the general strike of 1926 drew near the two men scoured the country trying to find others who would join them.
