The company was originally named IntelliCorp and in 1980 began developing software for a new desktop publishing platform, the DEC VMS PADIVS terminal, which became known as the PADIVS family of terminals. The PADIVS family of terminals allowed desk-based users to interact with mainframe computers. It also brought true color graphic workstations, color printers and workstations in the late 1980s.
IntelliCorp entered the CAD market in the early 1980s, releasing two-dimensional drafting software. They called it "CAD" and brought it to the mainframe computing environment. In 1984, the first version of the software was released, and it was called "AutoCAD 1.0". The new program used a visual programming language called CASE. CASE would allow the users to define their own user interfaces for the design tools, and for automatic generation of construction documents and other outputs.
