AutoCAD is not a package like Revit or ArchiCAD that provides the user with a series of separate tools to build a house or a room. AutoCAD is a single tool with a single purpose: to draw freehand or create geometric objects and assemble them into drawings. You can save your work as DWG or DXF drawings. AutoCAD provides the user with an unlimited number of ways to manipulate drawings, or navigate the desktop. You can navigate with a mouse or a pen.
AutoCAD is not a microcomputer application like SuperCAD or MacDraw. AutoCAD can be run on any computer, tablet or smartphone with a digital tablet. AutoCAD is not an Android app.
The name AutoCAD was the product of a naming contest among Autodesk's staff. The name was first applied to AutoCAD for the CP/M operating system, and when a version for the IBM PC operating system, AutoCAD 1.0, was released in 1981. The name was then transferred to the Windows version, AutoCAD 1.0, and subsequently to all AutoCAD products.
Before AutoCAD, the most popular commercial CAD application on the PC, and the one most often used for freehand drawings, was AutoCAD LT. In November 2009, Autodesk introduced a new version of AutoCAD LT called AutoCAD LT 2012. Unlike AutoCAD 2012, AutoCAD LT 2012 is a 64-bit version of the product, and does not include the Classic Environment, which provides the ability to switch between the desktop and applications. In September 2016, Autodesk made AutoCAD LT 2012 available as a free download for current owners of the earlier version of the product.
In 2017, Autodesk launched a brand-new product called AutoCAD 360, which will be a cloud-based service for architects and engineers.

AutoCAD and similar products from other vendors implement a proprietary technology called AutoLISP. AutoLISP is interpreted, meaning that it is not compiled into machine code; instead, a so-called interpreter is used to interpret the AutoLISP source code for each drawing instance. This interpreter is written in AutoLISP, an interpreted programming language developed by Autodesk. AutoLISP is a descendant of LISP, a language that was invented at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) in 1958.
With AutoLISP, a user can create custom macros or plug-ins that are written in AutoLISP. AutoLISP source code is interpreted, a user can customize the functions performed by each macro or plug-in to suit their specific needs. This feature is unique to AutoCAD only, and does not apply to other design programs that support scripting.
The AutoCAD/AutoCAD LT 2016 release removed support for the older, less powerful OOP (object-oriented programming) version of AutoLISP. AutoLISP can now only be written in the newer, strongly typed object oriented version of the language, referred to as "ObjectARX" or "ScriptObjectARX".
ScriptObjectARX is based on the JavaScript language. It is similar to the Microsoft.NET language and other programming languages for the Web. It has powerful features, including true encapsulation of methods and the class system. It also allows developers to write their own plug-ins (extensions) using a command line tool called "NewScriptObjectARX" or the "Add-on manager". The previous OOP AutoLISP language, referred to as "Script.LISP", can still be used, but not from AutoCAD. The language is still included with previous versions of AutoCAD and can be used to create additional plug-ins for AutoCAD and other products such as AutoCAD Electrical. It is still installed with AutoCAD 2016 and is the default AutoLISP language.
The drawing that is defined in the AutoCAD file (.dwg) is never actually created in a temporary file. Instead, all object definitions are immediately available to the user of the program.
