The media as a technology, has made people more fearful than ever before, and in turn has sparked more destruction than solved problems in the past year. Media will skew statistics in order to favor their argument. They do this in order to scare readers in order to make them believe what they say. The news in question states, “Those experts caution that a major increase in cases could still come and it may still be too early to tell whether Abbott’s decisions to lift the statewide mask mandate and allow businesses to fully reopen could prompt a new wave of infections. Still, daily new cases and the positivity rate have leveled off over the past month, while deaths and hospitalization have gone down substantially” (Svitek). The reporter of this article bases their argument on a what if, and ignores the statistics when they work against his bias. The writer ignored the fact that numbers have not spiked in a month, yet he uses his technology of the media to try and instill fear for coronavirus to readers. Due to the author's narrative that masks are needed, he will twist the data to work for his argument. How does this reporter know it’s too early to tell whether lifting the mandate paid off? It doesn’t take a month to incubate COVID-19, and there is no justification for making people scared. The Black Lives Matter movement was sparked by the media not being reported properly. “Baker described the ‘fatal level of fentanyl’ in Floyd’s system and told federal investigators that if the victim was ‘found dead at home alone and no other apparent causes, this could be an acceptable overdose’” (Ramirez and Cineas). The constant narrative that George Floyd was killed by police is not a sure one. No one in the media reports that he had lethal amounts of fentanyl in his system, because that would make the media less convinced to riot against the police. News outlets specifically do not report all parts of the story in order to arouse the biggest reaction out of people, and it works. Billions of dollars in damages have been incurred from the riots sparked from George Floyd before the people even knew he had dangerous amounts of drugs in his system. Media outlets abuse the science of the mind in order to sway viewers beliefs. They get inside the mind of their listeners. “It used to be called ‘pack journalism.’ It has also been called ‘group think.’ It is the story line that the press corps en masse is telling or repeating. A modern term for it is the master narrative” (American Press). News stations attempt to report news in a way to make the audience believe a certain way by repeatedly saying the same type of things over and over again. This mentality of news reporting by the media instills a subconscious message for people to think one way. And when one person thinks the other way, the person claims they are wrong without talking out the problem. They are brainwashed by their biased news source to only believe one way. The reporter used the science of master narrative to instill fear in readers. The overall abuse of the media’s power in order to convey their message has made people overall more scared of their society.
