History 
AutoCAD was the first application that supported vector graphics in a 3D environment. AutoCAD was also the first CAD application that was a member of the Autodesk application portfolio. AutoCAD was the first commercially available CAD application.
AutoCAD was named one of the "Coolest Computers of the Year" by Time magazine in December 1987, and was described as "hardware and software that will challenge everything that you have ever seen" and "one of the most powerful computers you have ever seen". Some of the hardware used in the design was the z80 chip, 256 Kbytes of main memory, which was the highest performance available at the time, and built-in disk interface. The z80 was also the first microprocessor to implement an operating system with multitasking abilities.
Initially, AutoCAD was programmed in z80 assembly language, and required a series of steps to convert the assembly code to the higher-level z80 machine language.
Prior to release, AutoCAD had a number of bugs, some of which were considered severe and resulted in severe damage to existing drawings. As a result, AutoCAD became the first commercial software application to require a built-in memory test before installing.
AutoCAD was originally distributed in five languages: English, German, French, Spanish, and Japanese. Subsequent versions included Spanish and French.
