Licensing and distribution 
AutoCAD is released under the terms of the GNU General Public License (GPL). As of 2016, it was still the only CAD application based on open source development.
AutoCAD is delivered to users via an ISO installation file (.bin) on Windows, DOS, and Linux, and via a compressed installation file (.cab) on Mac OS X. The installation program is executed on both Windows and Mac OS X. Users install AutoCAD on a disk drive.
History 
Autodesk started AutoCAD as a standalone CAD program in 1987 and released the first version of AutoCAD in 1989. Its license required users to have a valid license for AutoCAD 2.
AutoCAD 2 introduced many new features for CAD, including image-based input and output, and a text-based design method. However, the program's cost and licensing for newer versions discouraged the use of AutoCAD, and it was overtaken by similar programs in the 1990s, including SolidWorks and MicroStation.
AutoCAD 2000 added the ability to perform two-dimensional drawing and planar constraints. AutoCAD 2005 introduced native integration with Microsoft Windows.
AutoCAD 2010 introduced a new user interface with 3D modeling tools and the ability to open and use files saved in the VHDL (Hardware Description Language) format. The new user interface used a multi-window concept similar to the one used in Microsoft Office.
AutoCAD 2012 introduced parametric design, which enables the creation of a model using predefined parts. It also introduced the Dynamic Input Manager (DIM), which allows the user to draw using multiple tools such as a mouse, stylus, and keyboard, and has the ability to work on a wide variety of devices including smartphones and tablets. AutoCAD 2013 introduced an updated user interface, and improvements in parametric design and the Dynamic Input Manager. The latter allowed users to add predefined animation and interaction to a document. A cloud-based user experience was also introduced, which enabled users to use AutoCAD without installation.
