The first AutoCAD runs on an 8-bit microcomputer, which is the easiest to program for and fastest for graphics. Many of the early graphics were done with a simple display controller connected directly to the CPU.

In 1990, AutoCAD was made available for personal computers, and a year later the first version of AutoCAD for Windows was released.
In 1991, AutoCAD also added the ability to work with other formats besides those created by Autodesk. Examples include PDF, PNG, JPG, and TIF, and AutoCAD can work with BMP files created by Microsoft Office and many other file formats that can be opened by other programs.
In 2005, AutoCAD SP4 was released. This version included a completely new user interface, a new 3D-modeling tool called AutoCAD LT SP4, additional data exchange capabilities, a new drawing board for all Windows users, new rendering features, and new editing tools.
